So on Tebow’s first three passes, he was 0 for 3 and in danger of being pulled. On his next three he was 3 for 3 for 139 yards and a touchdown. Then he bulled his way up the middle for an 8-yard touchdown run. The stadium shook.

Talent evaluators everywhere shook their heads, the pro-Tebow ones knowingly, the anti-Tebow ones incredulously.

Gristle McThornbody , no, but it means you can win with RG3. It'll just take a different type Offensive staff. Tebow forces the Defense to play a little different than Newton or RG3 will force. Tebow is a much better, natural Football runner, especially up the middle & at hitting the running lanes. Newton has a higher top speed than Tebow though he doesn't make the cuts as well, but get him going and he's a terror on the run in the open field. (Basically, Tebow is like a fullback with the ball. Newton is more of a breakout runner. You don't really go for many 4 yard runs, intentionally, with him. RG3 is like Chris Johnson.)

RG3 projects more like Michael Vick, though a much better passer (coming into the league). Newton is fast & powerful for a runner. RG3 is a world-class hurdler. He isn't going to run with the same power, but that first step and top end speed is probably in the 4.2 or lower, if he trained specifically for running that.

So, yes, you can win with this type of Offense. What you can't really do is run your QB 20+ times per game. I expect, even next year, that Tebow has maybe 5 designated runs per game. Make them respect the Zone Read early, use the power of Tebow in the Red Zone. (And work on a Red Zone Offense, as Tebow pretty much *is* the Red Zone Offense) But it's a type of play that will be there for the next 3-5 years. After that, he should be a good enough passer to not need to run that. Though they'll fake it for a long, long while. Tebow will have multiple play action looks for his whole career.
Posted by OutInOregon on 2012-01-09 01:52:26 Agreed. That's what Tom Jackson and Dilfer said moments ago. If Tebow can maintain this type of passing consistency, defenses can't defend it. Choose your poison. Lanes and receivers will be wide open consistently. TJ said if Tebow can recognize that, he'll have an easier go of things than a traditional pocket passer.

This is making me rethink the value of a RG3/Tebow/Newton type of player. Is it possible RG3 might be a more valuable prospect than Luck?

If he can get consistency out of his passing, this offense can be as explosive as any (maybe not the Saints). Can you imagine what it's going to be like if Green or Julius can become effective receivers? Whoooo boy!
