OTC: As of now, Broncos would have two 2016 compensatory picks

Andrew Mason has an excellent article for the team’s official website (and cites OTC) that demonstrates work that John Elway has done to project picks for the Broncos, coming to a similar conclusion as my program has. Denver holds two picks now but has the potential to get more.

Per Nick, Denver would net a third-rounder for Julius Thomas and a fourth-rounder for Orlando Franklin, and could also benefit from Terrance Knighton earning a weight incentive in Washington. Among remaining free agents, Wes Welker and Nate Irving could potentially add to that.

Good stuff Nick. Especially interesting to see how NE is structruing contracts to work the compensatory system - they declined team options on Revis and Browner which made them unrestricted free agents who are included in compensatory pick formula, rather than terminating the contracts which would make them "street" free agents who are not included in the formula.

I assume they have to explicitly declare the team options in the contract (which I believe means that they have to be exercised no later than the first day of the league year) as opposed to the typical contract that has roster bonuses in future years (which are usually due several days into the league year). So if Denver decided to part ways with Ryan Clady before paying him his 2015 roster bonus, that would be considered terminating the contract so he would not count in the compensatory formula. Do you know if that is correct?

3rd and 4th is much, much better than 4th, 6,6,7.

Part of the formula for awarding comp picks is based on how well the player does in his first year with a new team. So you have to wait a year.

Yeah it's always for the following year. That's how it works. What's the problem - they have likely four picks coming this year's draft as Russ notes, for *last year's* free agent losses. They could have ten draft picks in April if they keep them all.

I doubt they would want them to count this year as they already have four comp picks (projected by OTC: 4th,6,6,7). Add those to the (I believe) 6 picks they already have, and assuming they actually use all those picks in the draft, they'll have a hard time retaining them all as is.
