Klis: Broncos want Will Montgomery, Virgil Green to return

Broncos evaluating all kinds of players to restock roster

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Broncos also pursue Mark Sanchez, the most accomplished quarterback in the pool of free agents.

The Broncos also are expected to try to re-sign center Will Montgomery and backup tight end Virgil Green, who will command raises without taking up much veteran budget room. Next up among the Broncos’ free agents are tight end Julius Thomas, defensive tackle Terrance Knighton, safety Rahim Moore and offensive lineman Orlando Franklin. The Broncos would like them to return, but not at the top-of-the-market prices they will command.

We're going to assume that Klis is just trolling us all with that first line.

Mark Sanchez. Yeah Klis, that's exactly what the Broncos need. Then you end up in 2015 with a QB controversy between an unproven youngster and a veteran who has proven to be mediocre. Great move. Kill the youngster's confidence and create a locker room divide. Klis for GM.

I don't think Dysert's ceiling is all that high. Any team in the league could have had him when Denver passed him through waivers this year, and no one bit. Your point about the other needs is well-taken, but I still expect a QB to be selected no later than the third round. I don't think it's wise to wait to for the situation to become desperate before addressing a need at the QB position.

See, I'd almost rather let other teams potentially overdraft athletic projects like Williams for Funchess. A lot of "experts" have projected Walford for Denver in the 2nd round. I'd like that. I also feel like because O'Leary is smallish and not particularly athletic he'll slide into early Day 3. As somebody who watched a lot of FSU games hoping for their winning streak to be snapped, I have to say that O'Leary almost always jumped out as a blocker both on the line and out of the backfield and it seemed like he on 3rd and long he always made the big catch. I think he'd be a steal in the middle rounds if the Broncos don't draft somebody like Williams or Walford early.

Right. They're not going to take a QB if they don't think the guy is talented, but I think it's way too early to declare this clad of QBs a dud. Brett Hundley projects as a late 1/early 2 right now, and at least one other QB (Petty, Carden, Grayson, Mannion) will charge up the board with a good offseason showing at the combine and/or pro day.

The logic at the time was "Why spend a high pick on a QB rather than help Manning win?" While I agree that the fans shouldn't be paid attention to, that same point holds truer now than ever. At least in 2012, it was a very deep draft class and there was more quality deeper than is likely this year.

I would say that depth behind Wolfe and Jackson at the DE spots, depth out outside rusher and O-Line options are all already more pressing needs than QB. Depending on how many free agents are kept on the team, TE, FS and DT could also be early draft needs.

Given that, except maybe Winston and Mariota, the other available QBs project as backups, I don't know why they'd draft somebody early when Osweiler and Dysert are arguably more talented, have higher ceilings, and have experience.

Yes and at the undoubtedly most important position on the team.

That said, not sure they would take one early if they don't see the value and as Drew stated the QB class is questionable. If Manning returns they have at least 1 more year whether they do or don't have confidence in Os.

Because if you don't have one the season is a total loss. It's not fair to the other players on the team if management makes no effort to field a team with competent players at every position. If you're willing to simply give up on the season when the starter doesn't play well, why carry a backup QB at all?

The logic is pretty simple. It's better to have options than to not have options. That applies to nearly every position on the roster. What if Osweiler fails? Isn't it just good planning to have another potential starter already on the team?

I don't see the logic in that. The Broncos spent a second rounder on Osweiler in a very deep draft and people freaked. Spending a similar pick in what may be Manning's swan song would be met with venom. Not to mention, after Mariota and Winston the argument can be made that no other QB deserves to be a 1-3 round pick.

I would be fine with Mannion in round five or six. This is a really awful quarterback class. I wouldn't mind letting Kubiak work with Hundley if he slipped to the bottom of round four where he belongs.

Excellent point! Green only slid in the draft because of his knee injuries If I recall. I would love to see him paired with somebody like Walford from Miami or O'Leary from FSU and have two TEs who can move around formations, block and catch.

A veteran FA would provide competition for Osweiler and would give the team another option in case he can't get it done. A backup with starting experience would be crucial if the team moves forward without Manning.

He did, that portion just wasn't PC'd. He says:

"Demaryius Thomas is by far the top in-house priority. The Broncos can resume contract-extension negotiations that broke off last July by slapping an estimated $12.7 million franchise tag on their top wide receiver anywhere from Feb. 16 to March 2.

This would pretty much allow the Broncos to maintain Thomas' rights through the 2015 season, although the expectation is he would hold out from organized team activities and minicamp until a new deal is reached."

The interesting fact about Green is that he was pegged as and played as an athletic pass catcher at Nevada. The blocking aspect emerged as his need to carve out a role in Denver.
In other words, he might easily transition into a dynamic pass catcher given the chance.

Sanchez wouldn't come here. Not with starting opportunities on at least a half-dozen other teams. It'd also muddy the waters for Osweiler.

I do see some logic in drafting a QB on Day 3 to develop in case Osweiler walks. Have I mentioned how important it is to sign Osweiler for 2016 and 2017? Of the weak crop, I actually think Sean Mannion from Oregon State makes a bit of sense. Played in a pro-style offense. Projected as a mid-rounder in 2014. Stayed. OC quit to go to the New York Giants. Had a bad year and now he's likely a late-rounder.

I also see logic in starting Green, letting somebody else pay Thomas, and drafting a TE in the early-mid-rounds or signing a vet like Daniels or keeping Tamme.

Hate to say it, but if PFM doesn't come back, Sanchez may be the best choice. He's mobile and could run the Kubiak offense. Be careful what you wish for.

Sanchez is very much in play if Manning hangs it up. I expect they'll draft a QB either way, but if Manning retires they'll bring in a veteran to compete with Osweiler for the gig in 2015. Sanchez, Jake Locker, Brian Hoyer, T.J. Yates, and Ryan Mallett are all possibilities.
