Fair enough, I do think he holds on to the ball too long at times. Can’t blame the OL for all those sacks when they hold on as long as they can. That’s different from plays where their blocking breaks down right away. As I’ve said here before, there is plenty of blame to go around. And as I’ve also said, if there’s an argument for playing Tebow more it would be that he’s a lot more mobile so he can avoid sacks better. But then again he’s also a rookie so he is just as likely to not take a sack or throw the ball away and instead get picked off. Orton lead some nice drives there, too. Again, I agree, he can share some of the blame, esp on plays where he holds on to it way too long. And some of the blame can go to erratic play calling. And some can go to a defense that is, as said above, way too porous and soft in the middle and on coverage. And on turnovers and inability to get TOs back. And on and on…
Anyway, there’s a new post above this one.
That’s definitely fair. That game would have been different if the middle wasn’t filled with poor play on offense and defense. But he’s not a bad QB, he made it close. We are so used to 4th quarter comebacks from Elway still that it’s hard to accept mediocrity when its doable.
Well Underdog, if we can pick and choose what we get to keep from a game and what we get to discard, it isn’t hard to create a 16-0 season.
Truth is, this was a mediocre team that manhandled the Broncos at altitude, in Invesco Field, and hadn’t done well on the road in a long, long time. The Broncos are battling to stay close in games they should dominate, and they’re getting blown out in games they should be competing in.
@underdog
But you can blame him for the bad throws that he made, especially the deep ones that could have been TD’s to Lloyd. He has to be responsible for some portion of the horrendous 3rd down conversion rate.
And he is to blame for holding onto the ball too long and getting sacked by Chris Long.
Can’t blame Orton tho for the dropped balls, missed catches. He’s put many on the money. And the pass protection, again, has broken down when they need it to step up. Such a bummer given that was a great comeback. If they hadn’t turned it over late in the 1st half, for one thing, then that’s 3 less points for the Rams. Those are the execution mistakes that have nothing to do with Orton or even with McDaniels, but have killed their season.
Cheers all.
Well,that would be that
Arghhhh!
People are going to point to how the comeback came against the prevent D (and conservative O) and when the chips were down, Orton did not have what it takes to finish it.
I can’t disagree right now with that thinking.
Damn. Penalties—they beat themselves on that one.
Orton seriously held the ball too long that series.
Well guys. They made it interesting. Not the ending we wanted but it was close.
Man he has to get the ball out faster!! WE CAN DO THIS! COME ON DG
Now it’s on Orton… Let’s go Broncos!
Holy crap, Bruton almost blocked that even more hugely than that just was.
WOW!!!! This is amazing! I have no idea what to think.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
This shows me something. I like it.
#SouthStands
Why not! We are gonna win!
Yah, Win or lose, and probably still lose, I am very pleased to see some life in Broncos at last, nice comeback to make it a game at least.
Why not just kick off normally now?
Odd series, but go D!
Like the call here for the onside
On sides or let d do it?
I feel really bad for The MHR staff. The site seems have moved way away from what it was intended to be. Lots more posters but equally more craziness and mindless negativity.
Alright SpaceCowboy, will our D hold up one more time for us?
I do like this comeback!
WOO HOO!!! DECKER!! I love seeing him finally!
HURRY UPPP
EDDIE MAC! I mean ERIC DECKER!!!!
Aight boys. Let’s make this a game…
I would say that as long as we aren’t negative and hating, we can point out flaws and be sarcastic here….I hope <img alt="tongue laugh" height="19" src="http://www.singernet.com/images/smileys/tongue_laugh.gif" style="border:0;" width="19">
Yea, lots of politics at MHR. It’s kind of weird actually. Whatever though, we have IAOFM.
Hey, there’s still some life in the team and in the stands after all.
Wow. I have been banned too. Why? Seriously… there’s a lot of politics going on…. but I don’t have any idea. What the hell?
Argh, Gaffney. Damnit. :-( Was a nice drive by Orton though.
I have some unpleasant things to say about MHR, but then Jenna showed me the light that is IAOFM, and I am a happier person for it!
Would have been nice to have Demaryius there.
Huh, wonder why the heck I was banned from MHR? Anyone there know why? I’m not exactly the most offensive poster there. <img alt="wink" height="19" src="http://www.singernet.com/images/smileys/wink.gif" style="border:0;" width="19">
Nice drive here at least. I hate seeing comebacks when they come too late, but better to see effort than not.
Yeah Eddie!
Lynch was right about that though. We take our time when we can’t afford to.
But look at the flip side of every offense we have played this year, they seemingly have no problem converting 3rd down at over a 50% rate….
What is the NFL average? We are far below, and this is the second year in a row we have been far below the 3rd down conversion rate
cue the 3rd down penalties
Man, even when our D steps up, the offense just doesn’t hold up. Doesn’t Orton think that when you make a hole for the RB to move through, someone would come through it.
Ok I was proven wrong on the idea of potentially going for it. Hopefully we can do something now.
SC - I think we can blame Orton when it isn’t 3rd and >10. hard to pick those up. TJ, maybe a stat pack on our 3rd down distances?
Decker… wish he had gotten some YAC and converted that. Come on, secondary. Bait that route they have been throwing all day, and pick him off for some points!
I think I would have started playing like it’s four down territory. Set yourself up for a manageable fourth down instead of going for it all. I know it’s still early, but it’s getting close to that point, and I would have liked to have the option to go for it.
at least the Rams are a tough road team…what?
At what point is this 3rd down conversion rate Kyle Orton’s fault?
Yes Harv and Jenna. I love offense but defense that hits and sacks QB’s keeps teams in the game. Look at these Rams. They are learning from Spags.
As much as I wish John Lynch wasn’t right, we have changed systems on D too much since 2000 and we are paying for it.
If Doom is the difference no matter what his new contract is worth he is underpaid. But he was here for the second half last year so he alone isn’t the answer.
We need to model the Steelers and Ravens. They are good every year and sometimes great.
Eric Decker with a catch SWEET
And yet Lynch continues to say the secondary is not the problem, even when his colleague says it feels like they have no secondary at all. Sure a pass rush helps, missing Doom hurts, but sometimes they deliberately don’t blitz and the secondary can’t cover anyone consistently. It’s a combination of things and blame can be spread around, but Lynch is just harping on the pass rush all game.
THe players seemed to like him when they asked he be interviewed for the job….. I’d like to see what could happen if he gets another draft where we focus on D. SURELY we’ll focus on D this year…. Right? And Oline?
Absolutely right Harv. The defense has been a patchwork. Switching Orton for Cutler exposed how bad the o-line was, which dictated the draft last year. Once the CBA is worked out, there will be a lot more movement in FA than there was last year, and the draft will be quite different next year.
The irony is that we played Lynch too long like we are with Dawkins - and that is keeping the young guys on the bench.
2 possession game still.
I don’t know, Harv, I hate the idea of the DC merry go round continuing. Continuity is important. And any DC will need good players to work with. So I think he deserves another year, even though I sometimes doubt his defensive scheming, to say the least.
Let’s make it snow, Broncos!!!!! Thunder White!
Maybe Simon Fletcher has some spare time? This D is not good, did anyone else notice that?
So… do we stick with Martindale for consistency’s sake, or do we go back to the merry-go-round…..?
Damn he made one.
Really, that Defensive pass rush is the main thing we need to fix.
Woohoo! Either this the start of a nice comeback or Orton and Lloyd are doing their stat stuffin’ thing. Let’s hope it’s the former.
DC, yeah, that was the Lynch comment that seemed patently wrong.
Haha true SC, theoretically possible to get back in this though.
Stopped that end around…. THEY LEARN! Imagine that!
See, that’s what we’re talking about. And Lloyd was open on previous drive when they went to a 2nd straight out/screen pass instead. Coulda been two TDs in a row, but I will try instead to enjoy the TD.
JT, I understand your frustration, but I find it hard to blame the coach for poor player performance. I think they’ve done a decent job in player acquisition—FA was poor this year, and it is hard to build both sides of the ball at once. I disagree with Lynch that the team has no one behind the aging vets, but they’re rookies and making rookie mistakes.
Orton getting padded stats in the 4th quarter when the game is essentially over? I have seen that show before.
I love you Broncos, but you hurt the ones you love :-(
GO BRONCOS!
One thing this offseason should focus on is a bit of speed on defense.
Ayers was playing really well before getting hurt, but he is more of a run defender.
Hunter, Haggan, Dawkins, and Hill lack athleticism that is necessary in coverage and creating turnovers
There it is!
@50 Hello Dennis !
It does make you wonder, watching the game today. I miss the days when the Broncos played defense.
These offensive coordinators as Head Coaches probably put fans in the seats, but I’d rather watch a boring 9-3 game.
These blowouts are beyond discouraging.
All I want for Christmas is a defense we can be proud of.
YEAH!!!!! Lloyd with the CLUTCH PLAY!!!!!! AND ORTON!!!!
Annnnd it was pointed out to me that this was John Lynch. I guess I used to like him once. Now he sounds like he’s going to the book of cliches when analyzing Broncos defense. Not much mention of injuries or other players on defense they have drafted, etc. But again, don’t want to shoot the messenger.
Orton straps on his helmet and leads his team to a COMEBACK now! Right? RIGHT?!?! Or do I need to wake up?
So there are 4 teams currently with a record worse than ours. 2 more with the same record after this week, assuming we lose. That puts us at 5-7 depending on SoS. We’ll at least have some draft power.
+10000000 Dennis
Come on, guys. SHOW YOU CAN BE CLUTCH!!!!!
We are saddened by this moment in Bronco history but the Broncos are our team. We were here before this era and we will be here after it! We love the Broncos here.
We may disagree how to fix it but we do not insult each other and then curse Pat Bowlen <img alt="wink" height="19" src="http://www.singernet.com/images/smileys/wink.gif" style="border:0;" width="19">
I love IAOFM.
Hate to say it but Lynch is making great points right now about the need for attention on D for quite a while now.
I continue to hate this analyst, even though some of that is him being harsh because the team stinks. But he’s also been unfair and wrong a few times, and he goes to the well many times too often.
There is always the Grey Cup people !
They are singing Oh Canada right now !
Go Riders !
I’m not sure that we can blame the staff. The play calling is not grossly incompetent. The problem is more execution. The defense can’t cover and the line can’t block. Lynch just had it right—the inability to rush the passer is killing them. The defense is broken.
Oh… Thanks, Underdog. Sorry for the double post. I’m not sure why that happened….
Southstand, the last thing I’d want is to put a potential like Tebow on the field under somebody like McDaniels. McDaniels will ruin that kid. I originally said that a new coach here needed a season and a half of changes, then that person would show the benefits of their work. My patience is very, very thin now. This is so bad, I think it’s worth showing McDaniels the door now, because there’s nothing he’s done as head coach that give me any indication he is capable in the job to produce a winning team.
It’d be worth two more years of stink just to get a head coach in here who has an actual record as a head coach of winning: Parcells, Cowher, Ditka, heck, beg Jimmy Johnson to come back. The Broncos fans who sold out this stadium for so many years deserve quality at head coach, and McDaniels is NOT that at all.
I glanced at that Open Thread at MHR…..wow…..
You’re welcome here, harv. We’re still depressed and frustrated as all get out, but less apocalyptic and apoplectic <img alt="wink" height="19" src="http://www.singernet.com/images/smileys/wink.gif" style="border:0;" width="19">
I hope Dawkins is alright.
Can I defect here from MHR? I’m tired of seeing how the Broncos will suck until the end of time. THis is rough, no doubt…. but I wanna cheer on my team.
Also, calling swing passes twice in a row that are obviously not working instead of going to Lloyd deep does not help an ailing team, either.
And yet another stalled drive.
TT please, at least it will be new and exciting and have a different smell
Can I defect here from MHR for a more positive analysis of this embarrassing game? It’s bad enough to have to watch the game while we lose. I don’t need to hear how we’re going to lose every other game until the end of time.
I agree Underdog
Also the Rams have scored at least 10 pts off of turnovers now, which is what keeps this from still being a game. I don’t know what they can do to reverse the turnover differential trend, but that would certainly help what’s ailing them.
Chi Bronx I made the same point you are making 6 games ago. Since then we have stopped losing close games and have started getting blown out more and more. I love McDaniels but I do not see this working. I live in NJ I am well aware of the Mangini/Ryan/Jets history.
I agree Ryan had Mangini’s head start and Mangini might not have lost his job if the Sexting Brett Favre paid attention to something other than Jen Sterger.
Moreno just took a screen pass and had a nice run and the fans were cheering. Fact is we deserve better than this staff and team is giving us!
Nah jtomasik, but this game is over now. Don’t you want to see something different?
Would never root for anyone to get an injury, and I like Dawkins, but he’s now out with a leg injury and maybe that’s the only way to force them to stop starting him.
Southstands, Tebow’s gonna coach? Umm…ok…what the heck…
JT—the day the Broncos are averaging 8 yards per carry is a weird day to pile on the OL and the running game, don’t you think?
Well IAOFM, it’s all over…fat man, Tebow please
BTW, I want to applaud everyone, the game is horrifying, but we are not pulling a lynch mob like some other places do…....
It seems like the players are not coached well on an individual basis, and the team isn’t coached well beyond the scripted plays. It’s tough to believe that these players are better than what was here in 2008 as well. Orton better than Cutler? I’m no longer buying it. The run game? That certainly stinks something terrible (which includes both Moreno and the O-line). The defense? Sheesh. Bad all around. I think that these are average players being managed by a sub-par staff.
....sheesh…and Hillis coughs it up again…wait, that was Moreno. Hillis was the guy not good enough to player here who stank it up today with 3 TD’s and 131 yards.
I thought for sure McDaniels would have this team showing its character by now. It’s gone the opposite direction. Spin this how you want, guys, but the stats, the blowouts, and the team record indicate this organization is a shadow of 2008, much less 1998.
No I didn’t, Dennis. That’s why I said worst-case scenario. They went 9-7 with Mangini, and Ryan is doing well coaching the players he put in place (have you heard of Darrelle Revis, David Harris, and Nick Mangold? I think they’re quite good).
And with that, I’m following Naggle. All that I care about this season is that we keep the lynch mob at bay.
So does that mean we confirmed you need to get fired once before you become better <img alt="wink" height="19" src="http://www.singernet.com/images/smileys/wink.gif" style="border:0;" width="19">
