Report: Broncos to meet with Northwestern QB Trevor Siemian

Denver quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp will dine with Northwestern's Trevor Siemian the night before his April 9 pro day, according to Ian Rapoport. Siemian's senior campaign was cut short by a torn ACL in November. The 6-3, 210-pounder completed 58.9 percent of his passes for the Wildcats, with 27 touchdowns and 24 interceptions, and a modest 5.8 adjusted yards per attempt during his time in Evanston.

Behind Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler, Denver has 2013 seventh-rounder Zac Dysert, who was a gameday inactive every week as a rookie and spent 2014 on the practice squad.

Still in the Big 10, Beat Ranked teams Notre Dame and Wisconsin last year. That said this guy threw 7 TDs and 11 INTs, and only had a 58% completion percentage.

They should go after whomever they believe will be the most sought after by other teams/who they would have the most trouble signing.

Pretty sure that Northwestern is in a major conference. Last time I checked it used to be the BIG a 10, since I do not really follow college FB any more they might have been demoted to ncaa D2 or 3.
Or are they still in D1?

You're exactly right. When I'm studying QBs, I try to get a good feel for where they SHOULD be drafted, and then I assume they'll go one round earlier. I don't think that's limited to just the mid-round guys, either. In my opinion, Winston and Mariota are both going to get picked a round earlier than they should as well. Leonard Williams is a FAR better prospect than both of those QBs, but he may not be picked before they are.

Overall, I like Grayson, but am pretty sure that he may be gone by the time the team picks in the 2nd. I don't think he'd be worth that level of investment.

Aside from him, I think Oregon State's Mannion may be worth one of the 5th round picks. Big, strong arm, familiar with pro-style offense. His weakness is his mobility and handling pressure. I'd be curious how he'd do in Kubiak's run-first approach where rushers may be held at bay. Worked well for Schaub for quite a while.

At worst, he could be a solid backup behind Osweiler. At best, maybe he's a find. That is, if he makes it to Day 3. I always assume that mid-level QBs will get drafted a round earlier than they ought to just because teams throw shit against hte wall.

I think it is more a matter of college pecking order. A great QB from West Texas A&M college isn't going to get the attention an average QB from Texas A&M is going to get. Teams will have less tape and more importantly less reliable tape. Does throwing for 500 yards against Weber state actually mean anything? It might mean enough to get a contract as a UDFA but it isn't going to get you drafted.

It's unfortunate that so many of the comp picks were 7th rounders. They'll end up using picks on guys that they may have been able to sign after the draft. But, it does guarantee that they won't have to compete with other teams for the services of those players.

My best guess right now for those 7th round comps, in no particular order, is pass-rushing OLB, P, and FB.

Long shot / camp body QBs can be added as UDFAs.

We do have an abundance of 7th rounders this draft and I believe most can't be used in trades. So this could also be seen as a way to spend those picks. But I do think you're right it will be either creating goodwill to sign him as UDFA or to see if its worth a late round pick.

There is no advantage to a "smokescreen" involving a player that will likely go undrafted. The Broncos are most definitely interested in adding QBs this offseason. I would chalk this up to due diligence, just like the meeting with CSU-Pueblo's Chris Bonner. It's most likely a "hey son, we like your game. If/when you don't get drafted, we would be interested in bringing you into camp."

The meeting with CSU's Grayson, on the other hand, indicates an interest in drafting a QB in the late 2nd or 3rd round.
