After his hometown Houston Texans, which he coached for most of eight seasons, the Denver gig has to be a close second for Kubes as dream jobs go. He figures to be the clear frontrunner now, and it would be something of a shock if John Elway does not hire his longtime former backup and coach.
Denver already interviewed offensive coordinator Adam Gase about a possible promotion, and is schedule to meet with Cincy secondary coach Vance Joseph on Friday. Another Friday interview, with Detroit DC Teryl Austin, has been either postponed or canceled. The team is also interested in Seattle DC Dan Quinn, but cannot interview him until after the Seahawks' playoff run is over. Former Niners DC and former Bills HC Doug Marrone have been mentioned as other possible candidates.
According to Mike Klis, Elway & Co. hope to have their new coach in place by the early part of next week.
Old friend Rick Dennison is another possible HC candidate, but he may also head home to be Denver's offensive coordinator under Kubiak. It's also possible that Baltimore promotes him from QB coach to OC should Kubiak head westward.
It's been suggested that Denver's best chance of getting Peyton Manning back in 2015 is to promote Gase. However, it's worth noting that Manning's reported first choice among free agent destinations in 2012 was Houston and Kubiak's Texans.
