Report: Broncos’ DC search down to Joseph, Phillips, and two Smiths

The Broncos hope to wrap up their DC search early this week. According to Mike Klis, Denver's fallback plans to hiring Vance Joseph are Wade Phillips, former Falcons coach Mike Smith, and incumbent linebackers coach Richard Smith. The list does not include former Broncos DC Wink Martindale, who Klis suggested last week to be a candidate.

Joseph, Phillips, and Richard Smith all worked under Gary Kubiak in Houston; Smith was his first DC there, while Phillips was his last, and took over for Kubes on an interim basis after his firing. On Sunday, Jeff Legwold reported that Denver's path to hiring Joseph would require Cincy to find a replacement for him as secondary coach, perhaps former Giants DC Perry Fewell.

According to Ian Rapoport, Richard Smith is also a candidate to join Raheem Morris as a co-DC in Atlanta under Dan Quinn.
