Enjoy the game, and Go Broncos!
I know it won't happen, but I think Syd'Quan Thompson should make this team as a dime cornerback and as our punt returner. I have been unimpressed with both Matthew Willis and Tony Carter as punt returners.
He is also a hypocrite. He has been vocally critical of the replacement officials, which is fine, but his NFL officiating career began as a scab.
Quick Takes:
1. Manning and the passing game are ready to roll.2. McGahee keeps falling forward. Run blocking is still a problem, though. 3. Stokely is no. 3, and it's not even close.4. Hillman's burst is impressive. He needs to learn from no. 2. 5. KnowMo looked good, but the math works against him making this roster.6. If the linebackers can maintain their gap control, this team will be fine against the run. Not great, but probably good enough.7. We already know they can get after the QB.8. Rahim Moore... dude, you should know better by now. Will Carter or Leonhard take his place? I wouldn't be surprised.9. Who's the punt returner?10. Hanie was just good enough.11. Os acquitted himself well.12. Can we have the regular refs back, please?
Cutler went down because their OL couldn't keep defenses from pounding their QBs. I'm pretty sure Hanie had the same issues. Plus, Elway seems to see something he likes in Caleb, and he is god.
Just got back from the game. In case you watched, I was the blonde guy with the #58 Miller jersey on.
Immediate impressions:
1. This offense is gonna be good. They already are.
2. The defense is stout. I know there are concerns at linebacker, safety, and against the run, but they covered things pretty well in the first half. We're not going to need to hold an opponent to 7 points all game to win.
3. The O line provided enough protection to give Manning enough time to work.
4. The O line's run game was ok. However, I think that can improve if we stop trying to put Moreno in an "I". He simply can't find the holes. Hillman looks more capable. If you're going to keep Moreno, pass to him in the flat. Hell, Johnson looked better the few times I saw him used.
5. Lance Ball really has come along as a wide receiver. I hear next week he'll be playing center, and the week after he'll be the head coach. They really plan on moving him around.
Ok, gonna go watch the game while I work and see if my initial observations are accurate or if it was just the adrenaline that was talking.
Bruton has been clean up central and was used by Kyle Williams on the run after catch. Carter's value is greater than I thought too...Florence is ahead of Bolden for sure...
Also agree Willis just looks like he's playing not to get hurt..same with some of the back up secondary.
I might agree, except Bolden has been pretty putrid. That keeps Florence at no. 4 and Bolden no. 5, IMO.
Not sure Florence fits in...Safety looks shaky especially the depth...
Mike Peirera just irritates...he's a true ref. Waffler
Why would you take Os out with a chance to run a two-minute drill and lead the team to a win? I don't get it.
Os undone today by poor offensive line play (no surprise) and the drop by Bubba. Drops from Caldwell, Hill and Willis today. Think they'll be scanning the waiver wire for a possible fourth wideout? Stokes seems to have the slot locked down.
Florence has looked poor. But is that because we are not getting any pressure on the QB?
You can see the explosiveness that Hillman brings to the table. Huge burst up the middle... then tries to bounce it outside inside of putting his foot in the ground, turning it inside and picking up the first on second and one.
2nd team D has been spotty again today but at least they had a nice goal line stand there...
Does Ayers get a well done for getting hands on Kapernich or a bad play for letting him get away?
Right, JC wasn't really hurt because he could stand.
Anyways, I think the 5-6 regular season starts mean a lot more than the second half of any one playoff game.
Elwayis God.. Hanie also had a good game in the play offs against the packers when J Cutty walked out of the game with his 'serious' bruised ego
Hanie was a preseason warrior with the Bears, but awful when he actually needed to start. I think we should all pray to the God of Qbs, his holiness John Elway, that Hanie never sees playing time in Denver.
is that all that we want in a back up QB? I think probably yes. But need to see more of Weber to see if he is better than Hanie first
Well, Hanie has proved he can move the first-team offense against a second-team defense. Should we be enthused?
xtreme... maybe another team wont pick them up because they have their own roster decisions to make. I would like them to have employment but selfishly I would like them sititng at home waiting for a call if they are needed by the Broncos
Two perfect throws in a row from Hanie to side of end zone, the 2nd one was caught. :)
Some nice drives from Denver today and I agree, KnowMo looked pretty good on that one. I'm really rooting hard for him.
Omon and Johnson are both out of PS eligibility. It's pretty much 53 or bust for the RBs still battling for spots.
it may come down to who we can sneak onto the practice squad. A nice position to be in
KnowMo looked good on that catch and run. With JJ, Hillman and KnowMo, the Broncos are going to have some tough choices.
a hillman sighting finally
Knowshon lookin sexy .
knowshon seems to be hitting the gap harder
Terrible holding call on Franklin. Anyone see who was to blame for the sack on Hanie? Seemed that Beadles and Walton messed up on a simple stunt.
That blown coverage by Rahim Moore could be what allows Jim Leonhard to make the final 53. A team competing for a championship can't afford too many mental errors.
we still seem to struggle defending TEs
Thank you John Elway
I'm really liking what I've been seeing out of our first units this pre-season. Could be a fun year.
Joe Mays, train.
Prior to the TD, I wanted to make the comment that I think we will have a better chance at winning the field position game this year with PM. Not having a 3 and out, while backed up inside our own 20 and then having to rely on Colquitt to boom a punt is potentially a really big deal for this version of the broncos.
Yeah what cockney said, it's as good a measuring stick as you'll get in the preseason, while still of course not meaning nearly as much as regular season look. Niners are probably playing a bit more vanilla D than they would, but their first team D is quite good.
A helluva drive shredding a pretty damned good defense. And FINALLY a touchdown. ;)
they were ranked 4th last year and all of the starters returned. So its a very good measuring stick. Although we have to remember it is pre-season so they won't show everything
Does the amount of touchbacks hurt the rookies and undrafted free agents in their quest to make a team? Its just that they seem to have fewer chances to make plays on special teams
Cheers ppl, wondering what you know about the SF defense, how good of a measuring stick is this?
good to see Joe Mays in on the sack
FWIW, defense looked steller on that first Niner drive.
Chris Harris starting at nickel, presumably ahead of Drayton Florence.
Don't worry, Goodell reassures us that they are just fine. No problem! :-/
Wow! Take your pick. That third down play had illegal contact, holding, of interference. And the refs go with...none of the above. Sheesh!
The officials are garbage: There I said it (again). That was two interferences on the same play. Oh well, drive for points, that's always good.
yes seriously and no i don't. but thanks for your kind words...
If one more of our linebackers gets injured I will not push the panic button but I will smash the protective glass case around said button.
Seriously? You no longer get the Fox Network? Bummer... Well you might find a (cough cough) streaming site somewhere, otherwise I'm sure it'll get rerun on NFL Network a ton of times, if you get that channel...
enjoy. cablevision's contract to carry tribune network channels has expired. ugh.
w00t! finally a pre-season game I can actually watch, and it might be the most interesting one of them all.
I will be looking at a lot of things, but more importantly will be watching it saying: "Please no one get hurt please no one get hurt please no one get hurt..."
