Discuss the opening round of the draft with fellow IAOFM readers
Looking at who's left, I see the first three picks tomorrow as Hill, Fleener, Upshaw. If that's how the board falls, here's how I'd rank the Broncos options, in my order of preference:
JenkinsDavidMillerMartinWorthyGlennRobinson
Trade 36 plus 101 and 188 to NE for their 48 and 62 picks. 48, 57, 62 and 87 tomorrow night.
New England didn't have a 3rd rounder to give. I think the Tampa trade was good. The New England trade was bad. They should have got a future 5th or 6th with the #126.
In looking at the three teams that pick ahead of Denver's pick tomorrow, consider the following:
St. Louis - It's possible they could take Lamar Miller, but WR and OL are bigger needs and Stephen Hill is right there. I'm betting the Rams take Hill unless they really like an OL with the pick.
Indy - Maybe they take Miller, but if I'm the Colts, I'm taking an offensive lineman. We all know how bad the O-line was in Indy, how bad it's been and that it was Peyton Manning who made it look better than it really was. I don't think the Colts should pass on the O-linemen still available.
Baltimore - I doubt they take Miller just to send a message to Ray Rice. Baltimore needs O-line, WR and DB help more than they need RB help. They could use help on the D-line but I believe defensive end is a bigger concern than defensive tackle.
One can debate the value the Broncos got by moving around the draft board but I think they are still in good shape to get the players they want. If somebody moves up to take Miller (and honestly, that would surprise me), then take the defensive tackle who best fits what you want to do with your schemes. Or just take the DT and see what happens with Miller -- if he's gone, you are still in good shape to find help at other positions.
Check out Mike Mayock's top 100 draft prospects at NFL.com. There are still some good players available -- looking at who is still available, I'm pretty excited about what's to come. Only downside: I'll likely miss Day Two of the draft as Little League opening ceremonies for our town's league are Saturday and I need to be at the fields Friday night to help get things ready. Wish I could watch the draft but Little League is all about the kids and I look forward to it each year.
Oh, and the link to Mayock's list: http://www.nfl.com/draft/story...
We didn't. I am sorry, but all we ended up with was an extra fourth. We should have ended up with an extra third and fourth.
Chances that Miller goes to either Indy or StL? Pretty high, if you ask me. Hope Broncos are ready to take a DT, then pick up an RB later. Would EFX consider Jenkins at 36? That would be ballsy, but they'd get a top 10 talent at 36.
I don't think the Broncos got good value in their deals tonight. I don't understand how they didn't get a New England third rounder, and why the Broncos had to give Tampa Bay a fourth round pick as part of that deal.
ouch Indeed. I liked him. Still, will be much to choose front in need areas tomorrow.
"RT @9NEWSSports Broncos have 6 of the next 84 picks. They will be busy on Friday."
cool with trading back, but not sure we got value?
Ouch. Wilson goes at 32. Only Miller is left now. They better hope he's there at 36 if they really want him. I'm hoping they move from 57 into the 40s and take the best DT left -- could have Worthy, Still, Thompson still on the board.
They actually got a net positive value on the 31 to 36 trade, there just isn't a big difference in the 31st and 36th pick value wise.
I'm shaken. Not sure Miller will be what Martin could have been. I'm hoping we get Still, Worthy, or B Thompson is the pick at 36.
The Broncos could still end up with Still or Worthy, and David Wilson, and trade back up for more tomorrow. I will wait to see how this all plays out before getting angsty about it. ultimately, could be shrewd to stockpile for better value.
Hasta manana.
MUST....NOT....TROLL....DREW.....
It's going to be be Kendall freakin Reyes and Brock Oswieler tomorrow...my doomsday scenario. Bummer.
Yeah, we don't want another matt forte on our team. PHUQUE!
I had a feeling the Broncos were going to trade out when the top three defensive tackles were gone as expected.
So, now the Broncos have two seconds, a third and four fourths. Later second round pick for Osweiler?
DO NOT WANT!
Agree with everyone. Terrible value. They essentially traded down from 25 to 36 for an extra fourth-rounder.
Now, they clearly know who they want and feel that they can get him at 36. I just hope they use a couple of those fourth-rounders to move up in the second.
Not great trade value at all considering the Baltimore-Minnesota trade and the earlier Pats trade.
Trading down is fine, but they're just not getting value
Damn were going all new england on this draft
but sensible.
That was.......really boring
I wish I could get excited about stockpiling 4th and 5th rounders...whooohooo....
Wow
Broncos just traded down and out of first round.
please not doug martin!
Especially considering New England traded a third to the Bengals to move up 6 spots about 30 minutes earlier. Pretty weak negotiating.
You may be right. Good call.
Klis is saying Reyes. What a disappointment that would be.
I think its gunna be lamar miller at 31
yeah that pick hurts for sure
Most trades tonight have been losers for whatever reason.
I agree. I like moving back, but it seems that a fourth wasn't enough -- even though picks are going for less.
I fully expect a 2nd trade with NE tomorrow. We'll put a package together to get one of their 2nd rd picks.
Yeah, i think you're right, Drew.
If the Broncos still get Worthy after getting another pick, then I'm all happy.
Jonathan I hope
For what it's worth, we did poorly on the trade value chart. The Patriots moved up 120 points and gave us only 45 points to do so. 120 points is the second to last pick in the third round.
...or Cincy
Green Bay will take Martin
I can definitely see that packaging happening, yeah.
That was pretty cheap. A late 4th nonetheless ....not a huge fan.
Only got the Pats fourth. You can bet they'll package a couple of fourths to move up in the second or third.
Crap. Now I'm also gonna miss their pick 'cause I have to leave in a few. :(
Trade down to 31! Nicely done. Want to see what they got. Hopefully the Pats 3rd rounder.
Trade to NE to 31!!!!!!! wooohooo
Broncos trade pick to New England.
Looks like Reiff and Decastro picked before 25. Have to trade back....or take D Martin! Wooohooo!
If Pittsburgh doesn't take Hightower, and I am EFX, I am very tempted to take him with its pick at number 25.
DeCastro goes to the Steelers. What a bummer. Would've been an anchor inside and a huge improvement over Beadles.
Five years, the Browns took Brady Quinn at 22. They go with Weeden at 22 this year. They better hope it works out better this time, and it will have to happen fast with Weeden's age.
TRADE BACK to GB and take D Martin....tho cinch might have their eyes on him at 27. Damn it's getting real!
Hahahahah Browns go for Weeden.
Oh man oh man oh man... please be DeCastro... (Or Worthy or Reiff.)
I LOVE DeCastro! But I'd be fine if he just took over at guard. He's too good to pass up.
Reiff is 2nd best OL after him but would be ok with him too.
And they can also get a good DT here. Man, I'm already stoked. Don't blow it Broncos!
Maybe I'm wrong, but Stephen Hill seems just like Demaryius Thomas, one inch taller, ten pounds lighter and a tenth of a second faster, but the same offensive system and development. Not that there's anything wrong with DT, but it doesn't seem like much of a need to me.
Wow, if Reiff is there we could help our OL but I still think trade back is the play. Trade with GB and select DMartin!
How about this: take DeCastro, put him at center?
Klis keeps saying Hill is a real possibility. I'd be shocked, but you never know. I agree that they should trade back.
I just don't see a real need for another end. Ayers was playing better as the season developed last year and we seem to have more needs in other areas.
Trading back would probably give us similar returns on our pick but also give us more later picks for depth and quality in the middle rounds.
Wow. Ingram to SD. That's a bad pick for the Broncos.
We should trade back.
How about the Broncos trade up for Ingram? Versatile defender, possible big-time impact.
Damn you St. Louis Rams! Didn't think the Broncos really had a chance to get Brockers, but was hopeful.
BroCkers and Ingram to go 14 and 15 IMO.
Despite the chaos this draft is pretty much chalk.
Hope you guys are right about Poe. As a posted over on Ted's analysis, he could help turn that KC defense into a dominant one.
totally relieveved kc didn't pick melvin ingram. poe is a workout warrior future bust.
Dontari Poe just makes me think way too much of Mike Mamula and Vernon Gholston.
If he isn't he could be a headache for the Broncos for years.
Yeah Fletcher Cox, to the Eagles one pick later, might ultimately be the better player.
Gotta admit. With Cox still available at 12, I was kinda hoping the Broncos would move up. Probably would've cost too much.
14 picks to go, and Broncos likely will have someone high on their board still up there at 25 -- if they choose to stay.
Kansas City with a huge reach pick at No. 11 with Dontari Poe. I know they need a nose tackle for its 3-4 scheme, but I think Poe is better suited as a get up the field, attacking defensive tackle in a 4-3 scheme.
Dang
Yeah, though I agree with Mayock that the Chiefs should take a DT. Let's see if they do, though. Might be too high at #11.
Hightower
Promising early returns for Denver. The trade out set shouldn't get their hopes up.
No DTs yet, Kuechly to Carolina. Beginning to get hopeful that Brockers might drop to the Broncos.
I actually like Tannehill's upside more than RGIII personally. I think his accuracy on the run and velocity are superior.
I don't know how Barron went from being a limited cover guy to a complete S in a week.
Dolphins are the new Raiders.
Tannehill still seems biggest reach here so far, imho, but hey Dolphins do seem to like him and they need a QB so hopefully that works out for them.
Only 16 more picks to go!
Gilmore now seems like he's dropping. Kirkpatrick might be there at 25...but I want a trade down. Good problems to have.
ST Louis is now an obvious trade partner with us...even more now that they have 3 2nd rd picks.
Make it so Xman!
Serious reach, there.
Wow, Cowboys trade to 6 for their 2nd rd pick? I'm predicting 5 teams will be making all the picks tomorrow night.
This is nuts. Thank you Rookie salary cap!!!
I got carried away...I just traded my hammer for a future box of nails withmy neighbor.
I can't believe the Browns gave up so much for Richardson with SOOOO many talented RB's available in the 2nd round...they could have helped themselves out just as much by drafting Justin Blackmon...
NFL needs to get priorities straight...max of 2 congratulatory hugs for these players in attendance.
So is there no Broncos draft room TV?
Oliver Luck's kid or something. I guess Robert Griffin's grandson will be picked next.
RG3 is dating Katy Perry?
Love this day.
So who is this Luck kid?
Ok, we know it's going to be Luck, RG3, and Richardson. The Commish could just walk to the podium and knock it out, boom, boom, boom. But no, it's got to be 15 minutes of Luck highlights, 15 minutes of RG3. Going to be an hour before we find out something we don't already know.
Still can't believe the haul the Vikes fleeced the Browns out of, but good on them. And Browns had extra picks so I guess they won't bomb with this trade.
Anyone know what time Broncos may likely be picking IF they stay at 25? Need to leave in 2.5 hours....
