Klis: Broncos may consider Vic Fangio for head job

According to Mike Klis, the Broncos may consider former 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio for their head job. Fangio was passed over by San Francisco, who interviewed him two weeks ago but promoted defensive line coach Jim Tomsula instead.

Dianna Marie Russini reports that Fangio and the rest of Jim Harbaugh's former assistants have been fired (with the exception of running backs coach Tom Rathman), so Denver would not need permission from the Niners to meet with him.

Earlier in the month, San Francisco rejected a request by Washington to interview Fangio for their DC job, which, according to some reports, is going instead to Chargers linebackers coach Joe Barry. However, Adam Schefter says the firing of Fangio is prompting Washington to reconsider him.

Fangio has run the Niners defense since 2011; per Advanced Football Analytics' efficiency rankings, his squad ranked #8 in 2011#3 in 2012, #6 in 2013, and #5 in 2014.

From 1999 to 2001, Fangio was the defensive coordinator for Peyton Manning's Colts under head coach Jim Mora. One has to wonder if that familiarity is behind Denver's possible interest.
