No doubt. That was my first reaction when I re-watched that clip for the first time in years. I'd forgotten his epic save on that. What's even more remarkable is that Drive II wouldn't have happened had Kubiak not bungled an EP snap earlier in the game, which resulted in a miss. Both he and Treadwell had to be feeling immense pressure at that moment.
That said, my bigger point is this: Kubes was a Pro's Pro. You could see him actually go to the Ref and check all the contingencies, them kicking on 2nd down and all that. I think had he the slightest inkling that he couldn't get it up, he'd have dived on it and saved the day in another way.
Still, that was an unbelievable play on his part.
Happy Birthday, JE, but I thank God for Kubes on that kick against Houston every damn day. You see that snap? That was a real bitch.

happy birth day wilber have yourself some extra oats today
Drive II was the most electrifying sporting event I ever attended. 76,000 people just out of their minds with joy. To put it in the proper context, Houston absolutely humiliated them in the "House of Pain" in the regular season, and then moved through the Denver D like air early in the contest. We were sitting close enough to hear much of Reeves' angst during certain parts of the game, and I was sure the poor guy was going to blow a gasket. Denver overcame some bad history and horribly lopsided officiating that day. There was nothing to respect about that thuggish, taunting and smug Houston team, either.
I tell my kids about that one regularly, but they don't get it.
John Elway was the greatest. If we win another Super Bowl soon it will be because he sees the big picture like he saw the field. Thank God for John. Happy Birthday #7 you gave us all so many thrills....and you still are!
Oh, and happy birthday, Duke!
GREAT stuff Doug! I said it several times on MHR, and once or twice here...that Divisional game against the Oilers was THE point where my Broncos fandom went from "I'm a fan because my dad is" to "NOW I understand why my dad is so crazy for this team!"
Happy Birthday, Duke.
