Broncos will interview Vance Joseph for head job

Denver's coaching search will continue Friday with an interview of Cincy secondary coach and former CU Buffs backup quarterback Vance Joseph.

The team interviewed Adam Gase on Thursday and is scheduled to meet with Detroit DC Teryl Austin on Friday, but according to Vic Lombardi and Jeff Legwold, there's a chance that won't happen.

According to Mike Klis, Gary Kubiak will be the odds on favorite to get the job, should he agree to take an interview.

Joseph, a former Jets and Colts corner, has been an NFL defensive backs coach for 10 years, with stints in San Francisco (2005-10), Houston (2011-13), and Cincy (2014). Prior to that, he coached at his alma mater and at the University of Wyoming.

Why not consider Vance Joseph for the head coach position? He's got ties to the area. He played quarterback and running back in college and defensive back in the pros, so he's experienced, especially in the passing game, from both sides of the ball. He's got almost 20 years of experience as a coach, ten of them in the NFL. He's 42, which is young enough to have tons of energy, but not younger than the guys he's going to be asked to coach.

Are you sure about that? Kubiak IS under contract in Balt. Pretty sure the rule states that you must be granted permission. Generally, teams do, but I don't think that means it's only a formality.

Since it'd be a promotion the Ravens really couldn't deny permission. Of course, Kubes could say thanks but no thanks.

Agreed. That's why I think Dennison is a realistic possibility. Either way, I think it's worth noting that a guy that both Kubiak and Dennison would probably consider as a DC is all of a sudden interviewing. I'm sure he's a great coach, but it seems pretty random unless you're connecting the dots.

I will add, however, that I'm kind of bummed that Austin may not interview (unless he's not interviewing because he's about to get hired by Atlanta). Even if he's no better than choice 5 behind Kubiak, Gase, Dennison and Quinn - you have to pick the guy's brain. You have to see if he blows you away. What he's done as a secondary coach in Baltimore and DC in Detroit over the past four years is pretty impressive.

Kubiak or Dennison is coming, but I don't think this is a Rooney Rule thing. I think Vance Joseph will be the Broncos DC. Elway is obviously comfortable knowing that either Kubiak will take the job or that, if he is uninterested, Dennison is ready. Both would probably want to bring the Bum Phillips defense with them. Wade Phillips is too old. Mike Nolan, Wade's linebackers coach in Denver, would never come back here. Why not get Vance Joseph who coached DBs under both of them and has worked directly with Kubiak and Dennison in Houston (plus did a pretty darn good job in Cincy this year)?

This move has to have been made with a Kubiak/Dennison say-so.
