Broncos re-sign McCarthy, waive Johnson

As the Broncos prepare to face the Pats' lethal passing attack, they have made another move to bolster their secondary. After bringing back CB Tony Carter on Tuesday and releasing S Kyle McCarthy, they've decided to re-sign McCarthy to their active roster and waived FB Quinn Johnson to open a spot for him.

If a defense wants to throw off the opponent&#8217s timing in the passing game, it makes sense to try and get physical with the receivers at or around the LOS. With 6&#82177&#8221, 275 Gronkowski (is he really that big?), you want to treat him like he is a DE and you&#8217re a offensive tackle, keeping him away from your pocket. Probably a crazy idea, but I&#8217d consider doubling Gronk with 1 slow, stout defender to tangle him up at the line, and a sure-tackling defensive back playing 5-10 yards off the line. I would not actually invest bailey&#8217s talent in the dback role in this case, as dangerous as gronk is, but rather chris harris because he has shown the ball skills and tackling ability to keep brady a little honest and there is a double team after all. Bailey should be left alone with welker. and so who should play vs gronk at the line? if he were still keeping up with the defensive play book and not a full time fullback, i&#8217d actually assign larsen to the job, because can chip-block a big guy without holding.

I was wondering about the Safety position and McCarthy specifically. Firstly, let me admit to having to a certain knack for roster math, which is a type of developed intuition. I don&#8217t claim to be an &#8216Xs and 0s&#8217 guy, which I can say without any trace of false modesty, but I&#8217m also being honest here when I say that I&#8217ve considered many of the roster moves before they happen. And this was one.

The last move, which added to CB while subtracting from Saf, made sense from one perspectice&#8212since we needed more than 3 healthy CBS and Goodman was questionable. The problem was that Saf wasn&#8217t much better; Dawkins was dinged up, Bruton was out, Moore was struggling and demoted, and Bush was an extra body who had yet to show anything. That left Quinton Carter, who&#8217s a rookie, and nothing much else.

Johnson spent a long-ish time on the roster but never saw action, that I recall. I could understand his presence if Larsen was injured but he was a luxury that we couldn&#8217t afford with all the injuries at DB.

McCarthy is a guy who has seen action with us and has performed reasonably well for an inexperienced player, so it was unfortunate to lose him although understandable given our paper thin CB corps.
