Broncos agree with safety Darian Stewart

The Broncos have agreed to a two-year deal with Darian Stewart, who is expected to replace Rahim Moore as their starting free safety. Financial terms have not yet been reported.

Stewart (5-11, 214) made $1.3M on a one-year contract with Baltimore last season. He started 14 regular season games (782 snaps, plus-3.0) for them and two more in the postseason (117 snaps, plus-4.0), and will turn 27 in August.

Here's what I like:

2014 POSTSEASON HIGHLIGHTS: Started both postseason
contests and produced 3 solo tackles, 2 PD, 1 INT and 1 FR for a
defense that produced 7 sacks and allowed just 82 rushing yards

Actually think this could be a steal of free agency. Talented fs who could develop. Moore was a favorite of mine, but he had seemingly maxed out his potential at average. I like Stewart's PFF numbers too.

McKenzie seems to be making the decisions and maybe with Davis. It certainly doesn't feel like he gives a thought about what the coaches think.

I say that because of the players he let walk last year since having a crazy amount of cap space. Coaches are always more loyal and wouldn't have agreed with that.

Trevathan and Marshall are both play makers but we need an Irving.

I hope so but odds of finding a hidden gem in a deep class is difficult enough...in an avg/below avg class we'll need Indiana Jones.

There doesn't appear to be a FS worth taking in the first three rounds. It look like a poor class. SS Landon Collins will probably go in the first round.

Not upset or thrilled about Stewart. Can't say the same about Shelley Smith given the better veteran options out there - including Will Montgomery.

Solid signing... not a star, but probably not a liability either. Sets the floor for the defense.

Not sure what the rookie safety class looks like, but certainly seems an area where we could use some competition.

Wow that's bad, Allen is not good. Rahim Moore has to be less than pleased with his agent. Though like Knighton, JDR must not have been that high on Moore, weird.

Nice get. I was worried they were gonna lose him. Safety choices in free agency and in draft aren't super great, and he's really solid, and still pretty young. So I like this. (I still expect them to draft safety, too.)

In other safety news, I just learned that the numbers on Nate Allen to the Raiders are four years, $23M(!) for a $5.75M APY. I know they're stuck with overpaying players, but still, that's ridiculous.

Those are my thoughts as well. Everyone else will likely sign after June 1, if at all, though there might be some hope for Tamme and Welker.

Nate Irving is the other UFA drawing interest from teams. If he signs with another team, that likely means three compensatory picks in 2016.

Of course. For comp pick purposes I'm hoping it's under $2.3M APY (which it also should be), so that Stewart is valued as a 7th. That way, if the Broncos lose a 7th round UFA, Stewart cancels him instead of one of Knighton/Moore.

I can't imagine his APY will be greater than $6 million, so for 2016 comp picks he and Daniels will cancel out the two 6ths for Knighton and Moore. If/when Nate Irving goes somewhere else they'll get a pick back, but what round would depend on multiple variables.
