The Broncos have re-signed DE Le Kevin Smith, who had played for Denver in 2009 and been cut following the 2010 preseason.
Champ Bailey, Eddie Royal and Kevin Vickerson were all limited participants in practice today and are listed as questionable for Sunday’s game versus Jokeland. The same five players who were ruled out last week will also miss Sunday’s game - Robert Ayers, Brian Dawkins, Andre’ Goodman, Darcel McBath and Wesley Woodyard.
The Broncos today added LB Diyral Briggs to the active roster. Briggs takes the place of WR Matthew Willis, who was placed on IR after breaking his foot Sunday. Denver also added WR Eron Riley to the practice squad to take the spot formerly held by Briggs. You can read more about these players in the team’s official press release.
In his Monday presser, Josh McDaniels has already announced that the Broncos will be without several defensive starters for Sunday’s matchup against the Jets. Linebackers Robert Ayers and Wesley Woodyard, safeties Brian Dawkins and Darcel McBath, and cornerback Andre’ Goodman are all out. UPDATE 7:45 PM ET - Ayers reportedly has a broken foot and will be out 2 to 3 months, while Dawkins will be out 2 to 3 weeks with a strained knee ligament.
Gary Wichard, the agent for several NFL stars including Broncos DE Elvis Dumervil, has been implicated in a case of a former University of North Carolina coach allegedly steering players to Wichard in exchange for money. An investigation by Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports uncovered multiple financial transactions involving former UNC assistant coach John Blake and Pro Tect Management, Wichard’s agency. Wichard and Blake are now under investigation by the NCAA and the North Carolina Secretary of State.
Wichard’s agency represents numerous prominent NFL players, including Colts DE Dwight Freeney, Jets DE Jason Taylor, Ravens LB Terrell Suggs and the Broncos’ injured star Dumervil. In July, Wichard helped Dumervil negotiate a six-year contract extension with the Broncos which will pay the reigning sack king between $41 million and $43 million in guarantees. Dumervil is out for the 2010 season after having surgery for a torn pectoral muscle he suffered in training camp.
Wichard did not respond to Yahoo! Sports requests for comment. According to Robinson’s article, the NFLPA is awaiting completion of the NCAA investigation before taking any action against Wichard and his agency.
Andre’ Goodman, Knowshon Moreno, Eric Olsen, Ryan Harris, Chris Clark, Richard Quinn and Eric Decker are inactive for today, while Tim Tebow is listed as the Broncos’ emergency QB.
Colts Inactives: WR Gonzalez, DB Sanders, King, LB Session, OL McClendon, Johnson, WR Garcon, DT Mathews
The DP is reporting that Knowshon Moreno is out for Sunday’s matchup with the Colts after sustaining an undisclosed injury in practice today. This leaves Laurence Maroney, Correll Buckhalter and Andre Brown as the healthy running backs who will dress. The Colts have allowed an average of 188.5 rushing yards over the first two weeks of the season.
Broncos wide receiver Kenny McKinley was found dead today. He was 23.
“Everyone with the Broncos is shocked and saddened by the loss of Kenny McKinley,” team owner Pat Bowlen said in a statement. “He was part of the Broncos’ family and will be greatly missed by our organization. My most heartfelt condolences go out to Kenny’s family and friends.”
The Denver Post is reporting that McKinley apparently took his own life:
Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson confirmed McKinley’s death, and said he was waiting on a field report from investigators before releasing more information this evening. He would not elaborate on how McKinley died.
“It was apparently a suicide, but we’re still investigating,” he said.
The DP is reporting that Shay Shay’s accuser withdrew her complaint, and that an announcement from CBS Sports is coming later in the day. Glad to hear it…
The DP is reporting the trade. Denver sends a 4th-rounder to New England in exchange for Maroney and a 6th-rounder. Interesting, to say the least. Laurence Maroney of course, was drafted in the same round as Jay Cutler. After the draft, Shanny claimed he was going to take Maroney had he not been able to swing the trade up to take Cutler. He also claimed that Maroney would turn out to be the best RB in the ‘06 Draft, and although he’s been productive at times, he has not lived up to the billing.
