12:36 am Jeff Legwold says on CBS 4 (Denver): I think a lot of people in Tennessee think he's [Manning] going to end up here [Denver]. A lot of people in Denver thinks he's [Manning] going to end up there [Tennessee]...Denver offers pretty much everything on the checklist.
12:18 am DJ Williams just claimed he has "40-inch pythons."
Do pythons qualify as "non-human?"
12:00 am Woody Paige fires something off late into the night. He writes: Without Peyton, the Broncos will keep Tebow as the starting quarterback "going into training camp,"...Tebow will say he'll use the course of events to motivate himself to become a better quarterback. It's not as if he has a choice, with a contract for two more seasons.
Woody has contacts inside Camp Tebow, so maybe he's leaking this to blunt the rumor that Tebow will ask out of Denver. Of course, the other alternative is that he's wishful thinking. We're just surprised Woody stays up past 9pm.
11:00 pm TJ Johnson wants to go on the record: He believes the Broncos will land Peyton Manning. SF doesn't have the money; TN doesn't have John Elway and John Fox. TJ says what crystalized it in his mind was Peyton Manning's body language with John Fox on tape. TJ believes he is a body-language expert and can read micro facial expressions.
He can't. This opinion and $3 still won't get you what you really want to drink at Starbucks.
Peyton Manning takes hands-on approach to free agency
While some in the Manning camp have suggested a decision would come by Tuesday, Manning hasn’t stated that himself to teams, sources said, and teams are waiting patiently to hear back from him following his workouts…
Manning hasn’t entered into contract negotiations with the final teams, sources said, and officials with those teams figure that Manning, if and when he chooses where he wants to play, will directly contact the team to let them know he wants to proceed, and then the expectation is Condon will take over negotiations.
“There is a very small circle involved in this,” said one source with knowledge of the situation. “It may really just be Peyton, his father and his wife.”
Manning has told teams he expects to be able to participate in organized team activities this spring, and, with six months or so before the season starts, his health is becoming less and less of a concern.
Can the Broncos wait 'til Tuesday or longer?
Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry...
Trade market would be strong for Tebow
I disagree with the notion the Broncos would have trouble trading Tim Tebow if they land free-agent Peyton Manning.
True, the quarterback spots are filling up. There are way more quality backup QBs available (Vince Young, Josh Johnson, Dennis Dixon) than backup jobs. GMs and coaches might balk at adding Tebow, who plays quarterback along a path unfamiliar to NFL GMs and coaches, and also carries along the distraction of a passionate fan base.
But as we learned from Tennessee’s late pursuit of Peyton Manning, owners have the right to trump the GM and coach.
Tebow, all by himself, lifted the Broncos from a six-year malaise in 2011. Tebow singlehandedly made the Broncos relevant in 2011. Tebow singlehandedly energized the Broncos’ fan base. And Tebow all but singlehandedly lifted a bad team _ NFL worst 7-24 from Nov. 1, 2009 until he got his first start in Game 6 of 2011 _ to the playoffs.
This runs counter to the opinion of people like Cecil Lammey, who wrote: I talk to every team in the league, NOT media guys...evaluators, scouts, front office guys - there's 0 market for TT
But it only takes one team, of course, which is a lot less than the number of people who need to purchase Klis' book for him to ca$h.
Elway’s quest to move on from Tebow may not end with Manning
The problem is that most free agent quarterbacks aren’t going to want to step into a situation where they’re viewed by the Tebowmaniacs in Denver as the guy who was brought in to push Tebow out. PFT’s Mike Florio has heard that the Broncos looked into the possibility of signing Matt Flynn, but Flynn wanted nothing to do with the no-win situation that is replacing Tebow in Denver, or competing with him in training camp.
Hasselbeck or Smith, however, may find themselves without any better option if Manning chooses the Titans or 49ers. The chance to start in Denver is better than no chance to start anywhere.
Having Tebow breathing down his neck (and condoning the infamous pro-Tim billboards) turned Kyle Orton into a skittish turnover machine last year, so it's somewhat understandable if Flynn doesn't want to compete with the circus. But what if the team were to sign Flynn and trade/cut Tebow? Is that still too much to bear? If that's the case, then let's be glad Denver's not in on Flynn.
Good Morning, Broncos fans! Titans brass met Peyton Manning in Knoxville to see the QB throw, with GM Ruston Webster issuing a statement quite similar to that tweeted by John Elway the day before. Could be that Webster was tweaking his competitor, but it seems just as likely Manning (or CAA) may have directed both parties what to say. Speculation continues that Peyton will issue his decision shortly after this weekend, but as Adam Schefter stressed on SportsCenter this morning, such a timeline has not come directly from Manning himself. Meanwhile, David Climer reminds us that Peyton has always been quite tight-lipped regarding his career decisions, as Volunteers fans know quite well.
With the Niners having entered the fray after having dragged their feet on re-signing Alex Smith, Smith is now considering a change in representation, and today he is visiting the Dolphins, who are considered the favorites to land former Packers QB Matt Flynn. Flynn also visited the Seahawks and is said to be deciding between the two teams.
There's been plenty of talk this weekend about how well San Francisco has played the situation, but imagine how they'll look if Manning chooses Denver or Tennessee, and Smith ends up signing elsewhere as well. Whoever is quarterbacking the Niners this year, he'll have both Randy Moss and Giants SB hero Mario Manningham to throw to, after the wideout agreed to a two-year deal with the team yesterday.
3:38 am Brandon Spano: Interesting that two local news sources had to take down negative Tebow news.Coincidence?
The links appear to be from Fox31 and KWGN. Who knows what this means.
2:21 am Adam Schefter: ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Manning still has not informed any of the three teams when to expect a decision, according to sources.
Schefter Tom Condon decided to put this out there at 2:21 am (?) due to a report/rumor that Manning's signing with the 49ers was imminent. Of course Manning hasn't said anything yet. Tom Condon has to figure out what he's going to do with Alex Smith first. But it's great to see $chefter and Morten$en working together for Team CAA as employees of E$PN.
12:28 am Public enemy #1, Mike Silver, is getting the vibe that Tennessee will sign Manning.
11:52 pm The 49ers signed Mario Manningham to a two-year deal.
Good Morning, Broncos fans! Woody Paige dropped something of a bombshell this morning - he says the Broncos' chase for Peyton Manning was started not by John Elway or Pat Bowlen, but by John Fox. Yes, the same Fox we have ripped for his conservative play-calling and fourth-down decisions; whom Paige had suggested last week would be unwilling to run Manning's no-huddle offense; the guy who considers throwing the ball to be a risky proposition. Yep, that John Fox.
It's been said and written countless times that Fox would always prefer to run the ball given his druthers, but it's been likewise beaten to death that he prefers older QBs. But at the same time, we're talking about a coach who has had the misfortune of having at his disposal only journeyman Rodney Peete, mistake-prone Jake Delhomme, baseball player Chris Weinke, a 44-year-old version of Vinny Testaverde, the oft-replaced Matt Moore, bust Jimmy Clausen, a Tebowmania-frazzled Kyle Orton, and Tebow, who Fox himself said would "be screwed" if the Broncos ran a conventional offense.
So here he is, facing potentially another year of Tebowmania in the face, and what does the risk-averse coach tell Woody?
Sometimes you have to be willing to take big risks in life.
11:26 pm The 49ers--thus far--aren't commenting on the Manning $ituation.
11:12 pm Jonathan Hutton (Titans Radio): Peyton Manning passed his physical when he visited #Titans on Wednesday. He will workout for TEN Saturday at 10:45a. Don't know where.
It's official: I hate Bud Adams.
10:45 pm Legwold dropping something (knowledge?): So, that's how the Broncos will decide whether or not to keep him, should they sign Manning. If they believe he can develop in a pocket-based, play-action passing game, they would keep him. If they don't think he can, they will try to trade him.
10:11 pm Albert Breer: Per league sources, Peyton Manning has informed clubs that he plans on making a final decision on his future on Monday or Tuesday. People involved aren't convinced he'll stick to that, partially because the process has been lengthy already. We'll see what happens.
10:01 pm More good stuff from Dave Hyde: Fun fact you won't hear discussed much in the media: CAA represents Peyton Manning, Alex Smith and Tim Tebow. Why won't you hear a healthy debate if there's a conflict-of-interest involved here - say, if the agency didn't press San Fran for a deal with Smith knowing their interest would help Manning? Because the media either gets much of its info from CAA and doesn't want to threaten that information pipeline or is represented by CAA themselves. Get informed how info flows, folks
9:49 pm Adam Schefter: SD agreed on 2yr $2.5M to $4.5M deal for DB Atari Bigby.
8:38 pm Former Broncos center Chris Myers will be back with the Texans.
7:49 pm According to the DP, Geno Hayes, Jameel McClain, and Marcus Trufant all visited Dove Valley today, where they were presumably hosted by Jack Del Rio in the absence of EFX™. All three players took physicals but will not sign contracts today; the article says the team would like to re-sign both Wesley Woodyard and Joe Mays.
7:45 pm Brady Quinn is expected to visit the Chiefs, where he could join the guy he was traded for - Peyton Hillis.
4:17 New Manning thread started, you freaks!
4:16 pm Vic Lombardi responds to questions of Why?: Cuz it was a physical. And a plea.
4:10 pm From Duke's Chronicle Sports: Elway, Fox, Manning and Co are leaving now. Manning did not throw a pass today. Odd development
3:26 pm Mike Klis is correcting the financial figures he cited earlier: My previously reported contract parameters for P. Manning were too low. Broncos, Titans, 49ers working off his old five-year, $90 mil deal. The old Manning deal paid him $26.4 million in 2011, even though he never took a snap. He was to get $35.4 mil this yr, but did not. His deal called for him to make _ gulp! _ $61.4 mil over 2 yrs; $69 mil over 3 yrs. Broncos understand the parameters. They're in.
